Shimmer has launched a brand new firmware release which is now available from the Shimmer website. LogAndStream is Shimmer’s most exciting firmware release to date and when combined with ShimmerCapture it will allow users to achieve even greater performance levels using the Shimmer3 platform.
In a world where data is king, we understand the importance of flexibility when it comes to data acquisition. Unlike other offerings in the marketplace today Shimmer provides users with configurable options in the hope of simplifying the data collection process. For example, in the past users have always been able to mitigate connectivity constraints by choosing to log sensor data to the onboard microSD card integrated on a Shimmer.
LogAndStream and ShimmeCapture expand on current firmware offerings and software applications that have been available to Shimmer users to date. They provide Shimmer3 users with a new way to exploit platform potential and utilize the rich collection of sensors onboard Shimmer3. Users no longer have to choose to Log data OR Stream data, they now have the ability to do both simultaneously.
Never miss a byte
Shimmer LogAndStream eliminates data loss. In the past users may have noted how connectivity issues were an inhibitor to the smooth passage of data packets to an intended host, but with ShimmerCapture and LogAndStream, simultaneous logging and streaming provides a remedy for these types of issues.
The application and its firmware will also offer users increased mobility with regard to the design and development of wearable sensor applications as it now facilitates seamless moving between multiple host devices. For example if a Shimmer goes out of range of a host device, the host will attempt to reconnect, if this is fails the Shimmer can then reconnect to a closer host device (using BT) while the data is logged safely to the SD card throughout.
ShimmerCapture and LogAndStream feature full support for Shimmer3 as well as Biophysical modules like GSR+ and ExG. The application also supports Shimmer 3D Orientation where the orientation of the Shimmer3 device will be calculated and displayed in terms of Quaternions.
Quick and Simple Set-Up
Using ShimmerCapture offers streamlined set-up of the data collection session, allowing the user to concentrate on the raw data output from the Shimmer3 platform. Sessions can be saved and reloaded to exact user requirements using the EEPROM memory associated with the Shimmer’s MCU.
As well as being able to capture data from Shimmer3 and all available biophysical modules, ShimmerCapture will allow increased control providing users with an improved configuration window for session management.
Precision is heightened with the ‘Gyro-On-The-Fly-Calibration’ which will allow the calibration of the Gyroscope while Shimmer is streaming. While toggle settings for ‘Enable Low Power Accelerometer’ or ‘Enable Low Power Gyroscope’ provide enhanced power management options.
There really is no one size fits all approach to sensor data collection which is why ShimmerCapture also includes the all new ‘Trigger Mode’ which will enable users to select how a session should begin or how a sessions should end. The two available options are ‘Undock Start’ or ‘Push Button Start’.
